The WhichBivvy Verdict

JRC don’t need much of an introduction on the bank, and the Defender Peak range is where that heritage meets a sensible price tag.

This is the classic pram hood shape, the sort that’s been proven on UK banks for decades, given a modern once over with a proper storm peak stitched over the doorway.

That peak isn’t just for show either, it genuinely lets you stand in the doorway during a downpour and watch your rods without getting drenched, which is more useful than it sounds when the fish start showing just as the heavens open.

Setup uses two rigid five section 16mm aluminium poles threaded through sleeves, plus tension bars to keep everything nice and taut once it’s up. It’s not a quick erect system, so budget a few minutes to get it pitched properly, but once you’ve done it a couple of times it becomes routine.

At 300cm wide and 275cm deep, there’s genuinely enough room in here for two full sleep systems side by side, which is no small thing at this sort of money.

The fabric is a 210D PU coated polyester rated at 5,000mm hydrostatic head.

That’s a modest number compared to some of the premium bivvies out there, and it won’t be shrugging off the very worst biblical downpours quite as confidently as a 15,000mm or 20,000mm shelter, but for the vast majority of UK sessions it’s more than adequate, and the taped seams mean you shouldn’t get any nasty surprises through the stitching.

Reinforced pegging points and the supplied heavy duty T pegs mean it holds its ground well in a blow too, so don’t let the modest waterproof rating put you off, this is a genuinely sturdy shelter on the bank.

The two way letterbox door is a nice bit of thinking, letting you fish from inside with just a small opening rather than committing to unzipping the whole front. You also get three interchangeable door and window panels, solid fabric, clear PVC, and mozzi mesh, so you can dial in visibility, ventilation, or full privacy depending on the session and the weather.

Front and rear mesh vents keep the air moving nicely in summer without inviting the local insect population in for tea.

Build quality feels genuinely solid for the money, the poles have a reassuring heft to them without being unnecessarily heavy, and the Velcro-in groundsheet is a smart touch, easy to remove and dry out separately after a wet session rather than lugging a soggy bivvy home.

Velcro rod straps at the front are a handy little extra for keeping rods tidy while you’re pottering about setting up a bivvy table or hanging a lantern.

Is it the most cutting edge bivvy on the market? No, and it doesn’t try to be.

What it is, is a proper, dependable two man shelter from a brand with genuine pedigree, built to a sensible spec without unnecessary frills, and that’s exactly what a lot of anglers are after.
