The WhichBivvy Verdict

The HQ Dual Layer does something no other bivvy at this price manages - it completely eliminates condensation without needing a separate overwrap.

The internal dual layer skin clips in and stays in, all year round. In winter it retains heat, in summer the removable rear panel turns it into a surprisingly airy shelter.

The 20,000mm Dura-Stop fabric is genuinely bomber, and the separate pole layout gives you more usable floor space than most comparable bivvies. It is heavier than a single-skin shelter at 10kg, but for a bivvy you can run all four seasons without buying extras, that is a fair trade.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • Built-in dual layer eliminates condensation without an overwrap
  • 20,000mm Dura-Stop fabric is class-leading waterproofing
  • Rear panel fully removable for summer airflow
  • Separate pole layout maximises internal floor space
  • No need to buy a winter skin separately

Watch out for

  • 10kg bivvy-only weight is on the heavy side
  • Not the most mobile option for short sessions
  • Packed size of 120cm x 35cm x 35cm is bulky

Should You Buy This Bivvy?

Buy it if...

  • You fish long sessions and want to eliminate condensation without buying a separate overwrap
  • You session in all four seasons and need one bivvy that genuinely handles everything
  • You want 20,000mm Dura-Stop waterproofing — one of the highest rated fabrics on the market
  • You fish European trips or warm summer nights where rear panel removal transforms the airflow
  • You want a groundsheet, frame support and rod retention bars included in the box

Look elsewhere if...

  • You fish short or mobile sessions — at 10kg bivvy only and 16kg total this is a barrow bivvy, not a carry-on-your-back one
  • You are on a tight budget — there are capable single-skin options available for significantly less
  • You want a quick-erect setup — the separate pole layout takes more time than a centre boss design
  • You need a 2 man option — check the Avid Carp HQ Dual Layer 2 Man instead
  • You fish narrow pegs where the 270cm width could be a squeeze
