The WhichBivvy Verdict

Wychwood have done something quite clever with the Epic Tactical. Rather than pricing up a stripped-out shelter and charging extra for every panel and cap, they have put the whole system in the bag from day one.

Quarter cap, solid infill front, mozzy front and a proper heavy duty zip-in groundsheet are all included. If you bought comparable accessories separately from most other brands you would be spending another two hundred quid on top.

The shelter itself is built around a five-rib aluminium frame with anti-twist joint connections and a pivoting lever cam that makes setup and pack-down genuinely effortless. The integrated peak with built-in rain guttering is one of those details that sounds minor until you have spent a session watching water pool in your doorway - it channels rain away cleanly and keeps the entrance dry.

Twenty thousand millimetres of breathable waterproof fabric means this handles serious weather without turning into a sauna on warmer nights.

At 290cm wide and 240cm deep with 150cm of headroom there is proper space inside for one angler and all their kit.

The two rear letterbox windows with tactical camo privacy mozzy mesh give you ventilation without sacrificing privacy or security. The repositionable internal storage pockets are a small touch that makes a real difference on a long session.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • Quarter cap, solid infill, mozzy front and groundsheet all included - no extras to buy
  • 20,000mm breathable fabric offers serious waterproofing without condensation build-up
  • Pivoting lever cam and five-rib frame make setup and pack-down genuinely fast
  • Integrated rain guttering keeps the entrance dry in heavy rain
  • Two repositionable internal storage pockets -- rare at this price point
  • Compatible with the Epic Tactical Extended Wrap for extra coverage
  • RRP is £599.99 but widely available for around £479.99 making it exceptional value

Watch out for

  • Full system weight of 14.30kg means this wants a barrow rather than your back
  • 290cm wide by 240cm deep is a decent size but experienced campaign anglers may want more room
  • Wychwood do not have the brand prestige of Nash or Trakker which puts some anglers off unfairly
  • The camo privacy mesh on the rear windows splits opinion - some anglers find it limits light
  • Compatible overwrap not available as standard - only the Extended Wrap which adds to overall cost

Should You Buy This Bivvy?

Buy it if...

  • You want a complete quick-erect system with no extras to buy - everything is in the bag
  • You want 20,000mm waterproofing at under £500, which is genuinely rare
  • You fish all four seasons and want a shelter that earns its keep in January as well as July
  • You appreciate a shelter that thinks about the details - rain guttering, repositionable pockets, proper peak
  • You want more space and features than the Compact version but at a sensible price

Look elsewhere if...

  • You need to carry your kit significant distances - at 14.30kg full system weight this earns a barrow
  • You want brand prestige to go with performance - look at Nash or Trakker at a similar price point
  • You are a solo short session angler who does not need the full system in the bag - the Compact version suits better
  • You need more than 290cm of width for a very large sleep system or extra kit storage
  • You want a twin-skin setup built in - the Epic Tactical needs the Extended Wrap purchased separately for that
