The WhichBivvy Verdict

Four kilos. That is the headline with the Wychwood Tactical Compact Bivvy and it is genuinely impressive for what you get.

Most bivvies at this weight are either flimsy brolly systems or tiny day shelters. The Tactical Compact is a proper twin rib pram hood design made from 10,000mm ripstop material that punches well above its weight class in terms of waterproofing.

The groundsheet and waterproof door are both included in the box which is worth noting at this price point. Plenty of bivvies at two or three times the price make you buy these separately. The rear mozzy mesh vent keeps airflow going on warm nights and the 16mm poles give it enough rigidity to handle a decent breeze without feeling like it is going to take off.

Packed down to 120cm it will fit on virtually any barrow and at 4kg bivvy-only you could genuinely carry this in a rucksack if you had to. If you want a proper full shelter that you can walk to your swim with, this is one of very few options that makes that realistic.

An overwrap is available separately for winter use.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • 4kg bivvy-only weight is genuinely impressive for a full pram hood shelter
  • 10,000mm ripstop material is far tougher than you would expect at this price
  • Groundsheet and waterproof door included in the box at no extra cost
  • Packed length of 120cm fits on virtually any barrow or large rucksack
  • Compatible overwrap available separately for winter use
  • Pegs included in the box
  • Outstanding value for money at under £200

Watch out for

  • 240cm wide by 165cm deep is compact so taller anglers or those with large sleep systems may feel the squeeze
  • 125cm height is low for sitting up comfortably inside
  • Single rear vent only so ventilation is limited compared to higher spec shelters
  • No inner capsule or mozzy front panel option available
  • 16mm poles are lighter but not as rigid as heavier gauge poles in strong winds
