The WhichBivvy Verdict

The Fox Frontier II XL Bivvy Camo represents the pinnacle of a quick-setup shelter design. Fox took the foundation of the original Frontier range and addressed the minor operational frustrations users reported, resulting in a system that feels significantly more refined.

The most important upgrade is the geared Easy Tension System boss. In previous iterations, the frame had a tendency to collapse during setup if you did not get the angle perfect. The new geared mechanism locks the ribs in place with mechanical certainty, making the setup process smoother and much faster.

On the bank, the internal experience is genuinely impressive. The flat back design is not just a marketing term, as it allows you to push your bedchair right to the rear wall without the sloping roof encroaching on your headspace.

At 165cm, it is one of the roomier shelters in the category. The blackout laminate lining is a game changer for summer fishing, as it keeps the interior significantly cooler and allows for a better quality of sleep when the sun hits the bivvy early in the morning.

Being able to adjust all four vents from inside the bivvy is a huge practical benefit, as you no longer need to exit the shelter in the middle of a rainstorm just to manage airflow. It is a substantial, heavy-duty piece of kit that is clearly built for long campaigns where comfort and reliability are the top priorities.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • The geared ETS boss prevents frame collapse and makes assembly incredibly intuitive.
  • 20,000mm hydrostatic head fabric offers top-tier protection in heavy weather.
  • Blackout lining regulates internal temperature and stops glare for better sleep.
  • Accessible ventilation allows you to manage condensation from inside the bivvy.
  • The 165cm height and flat back design provide class-leading usable floor space.
  • Vapour Peak is included as standard, providing essential protection over the door.

Watch out for

  • At 20.46kg, this is a heavy shelter and not the best choice for highly mobile, short-session anglers.
  • The premium build quality and geared system come with a price tag to match.
  • The sheer size of the packed bag makes it take up significant space on a barrow or in a car boot.
  • It is significantly more complex to maintain than a basic brolly or pram hood system.

Should You Buy This Bivvy?

Buy it if...

  • You fish long sessions and require a comfortable, spacious, and reliable fortress.
  • You struggle with traditional bivvy setups and want a system that goes up in seconds.
  • You value high-end features like blackout linings and internal vent adjustment.
  • You want a future-proof shelter that is compatible with a wide range of extensions and wraps.

Look elsewhere if...

  • You are a highly mobile angler who needs a lightweight, minimal system for quick overnighters.
  • You are working with a strict budget and do not need 20,000mm waterproofing.
  • You prefer the simplicity of a standard pram hood or brolly design.
  • Storage space in your vehicle or on your barrow is extremely limited.
