The WhichBivvy Verdict

The Frontier II X sits between the standard Frontier II and the XL in the range, and for a lot of anglers it is the Goldilocks option.

At 260cm wide and 198cm deep it fits swims that would swallow the XL whole while still giving you enough internal space to live from properly on longer sessions. The 140cm of headroom is the same as the standard Frontier II but the extra depth over the base model makes a genuine difference to how much room you have in front of your bedchair.

Everything that defines the Frontier II range is here. The geared ETS boss that prevents frame collapse mid-erection, the spring-loaded keyed elbow joints that click into alignment without faff, the 20,000mm VenTec blackout laminate lining that keeps you dry and dark regardless of conditions.

The four all-weather vents are now all accessible from inside the bivvy which sounds like a small thing until you have tried adjusting vents in a Frontier I at 2am in the rain.

The zip-in groundsheet is a genuine improvement over the lay-in-place design of the original, the widened front door makes access noticeably less undignified, and the Vapour Peak now comes in the box rather than as a separate purchase.

The X model also gets compatibility with the Inner Mesh Shield which the standard Frontier II does not, giving you an additional layer of insect protection and comfort on summer sessions.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • Fits swims that the larger XL simply cannot without sacrificing serious internal space
  • Geared ETS boss prevents frame collapse and makes erection noticeably smoother than the original Frontier
  • All four ventilation vents now accessible from inside the bivvy
  • Zip-in groundsheet is a significant improvement over lay-in-place designs
  • Vapour Peak, storm poles, carry bag and pegs all included in the box
  • Compatible with Inner Mesh Shield, Deluxe Wrap and Deluxe Extension for full accessory ecosystem
  • Available in green or camo to suit syndicate and estate water requirements
  • 20,000mm VenTec blackout lining handles UK weather and summer early mornings equally well

Watch out for

  • 19kg bivvy-only weight means this is strictly a barrow or drive-in option
  • 140cm of headroom is adequate but not generous for taller anglers
  • Packed length of 155cm needs a large barrow bag
  • Inner Mesh Shield, Deluxe Wrap and Deluxe Extension are all sold separately at significant additional cost
  • Pole and frame setup takes considerably longer than a quick-erect design

Should You Buy This Bivvy?

Buy it if...

  • You want the full Frontier II engineering but the XL footprint does not suit your swims
  • You fish longer stays and want 20,000mm waterproofing with blackout lining as standard
  • You want a proper accessory ecosystem with Inner Mesh Shield, Deluxe Wrap and Extension all available
  • You need camo option for waters with strict shelter colour rules
  • You fish from a barrow and the weight and packed size are not a practical concern

Look elsewhere if...

  • You need to carry your kit any distance as 19kg plus your other gear is a serious total
  • You are tall and need more than 140cm of headroom - look at the XL at 165cm instead
  • You want a quick-erect system - the Frontier II X is a traditional pole and frame setup
  • You want the widest possible internal space - the XL at 270cm wide gives you significantly more room
  • You are buying your first serious bivvy and do not need the full Frontier II specification
