The WhichBivvy Verdict

Fox do not do things by halves and the Frontier II XL is proof of that.

This is a bivvy built for anglers who want serious space, serious waterproofing and a setup system that has been genuinely thought through rather than thrown together. The new geared ETS boss prevents frame collapse mid-erection, the spring-loaded elbow joints click into perfect alignment every time, and the updated release trigger makes pack-down noticeably quicker than the original Frontier.

The VenTec fabric with blackout laminate lining is a proper step forward. Twenty thousand millimetres of hydrostatic head means you can fish it through anything the British winter throws at it, and the blackout lining keeps things dark when you are trying to sleep at 7am on a summer morning.

The four internal ventilation vents, all accessible from inside, mean you are not getting out of your sleeping bag at 3am to adjust airflow.

At 270cm wide and 210cm deep, this is a proper long-stay bivvy. The high, flat back design maximises usable space and the widened front door makes getting in and out with wet gear a lot less undignified than most. It comes with storm poles, a vapour peak, a zip-in groundsheet and a double-zipped carry bag.

There is genuine thought behind every detail here, which at this price point is exactly what you want to see.

Pros & Cons

What we like

  • 20,000mm VenTec fabric with blackout laminate lining handles all conditions and summer light
  • Geared ETS boss prevents frame collapse during setup
  • Spring-loaded keyed elbow joints ensure fast setup and perfect alignment every time
  • Four ventilation vents all accessible from inside the bivvy
  • Widened front door and reshaped infill panel improve access and visibility
  • Vapour peak, zip-in groundsheet and storm poles all included in the box
  • Strong accessory ecosystem including Deluxe Wrap, Extension and Inner Mesh Shield

Watch out for

  • 20.46kg bivvy-only weight means this is strictly a barrow or drive-in swim option
  • At this price point it is a serious investment and not for the occasional angler
  • Packed length of 161cm is longer than most and needs a large barrow bag
  • Compatible accessories such as the Deluxe Wrap and Extension add significantly to the total cost
  • Setup takes longer than a quick-erect design and is not ideal for mobile fishing

Should You Buy This Bivvy?

Buy it if...

  • You do long sessions and need a bivvy with serious internal space and headroom
  • You want 20,000mm waterproofing and blackout lining for year-round use in all conditions
  • You fish from a barrow or drive-in swims where weight and packed size are not a concern
  • You want a complete accessory ecosystem with wraps, extensions and inner shields available
  • You value a setup system that has been genuinely engineered rather than just adequate

Look elsewhere if...

  • You fish mobile sessions and need to carry your kit any distance at all
  • Budget is a concern as this is one of the most expensive single-skin bivvies on the market
  • You want a quick-erect system that is up in under a minute
  • You fish mainly short sessions where the full feature set of the Frontier II XL is unnecessary
  • You are new to carp fishing and not yet sure what kind of sessions you will be doing

Best Suited For...
